[b]Jus Wan - The Crossing[/b]

San Francisco's Justin Shields (AKA Jus Wan) first appeared on our radars back in the middle of '08, after Appleblim included the rolling dubwise atmospherics of "Action Potential" on his Dubstep Allstars mix. Whilst being a solid and well produced tune, it gave me the feeling that there was better to come from Shields—after all, that track was his debut release. Hence, I was eager to check out his sophomore release on Dutch label Tube 10, and I'm glad to say that my expectations have been more than exceeded.
"The Crossing" is a much more direct and focused effort than either of his two tracks for Apple Pips, and it grabs you from the off with its jittery percussion and weighty two note bassline. The deft modulations and hi-hat usage seem much more akin to a techno track structurally, and even without a standard kick, there's an implied four-to-the-floor motion that makes it a relatively safe selection for more orthodox techno dance floors. The real beauty of "The Crossing," however, lies in its sample. Taking the melancholic synth motif that appears regularly throughout the Eagle vs Shark movie (you may know it as "that film starring the bespectacled one from Flight Of The Conchords"), Shields loops and phases it to enhance its emotional intensity, whilst the bass and drums underpin it with their propulsive urgency. It's one of the best dubstep tracks to emerge in the past few months, and immediately brings to mind Mala's mantra about his own material: "Meditate on bass-weight."
Over on the flipside, "Flashpoint" attempts to marry futuristic 2-step with some of the classic hallmarks of dub techno. It's relatively successful, and doesn't lapse into pastiche as with many of today's straight-up dub techno tracks, but when held in direct comparison with the A-side, it's more than clear which track comes out on top.(RA)
